The best events coming up this month in NYC

There are always plenty of events to attend in NYC on any given night pending your inclinations, friend group, and your curiosity to embrace all the alluring things the city has to offer. Some of my favorite events come up last minute; I often stumble across a gallery opening or a pop up experience on the day of. It’s truly a golden nugget when a recurring event series I enjoy shares upcoming event details more than a month in advance.

So while more events will crop up as the month rolls on, here’s a quick rundown of some upcoming May events that will guarantee good vibes, great people, and a memorable time!

Saturday, May 5th

INSIDE THE HOLOGRAPHER’S LABORATORY — Head to Holographic Studios Inc, the world’s oldest holography gallery, with Atlas Obscura for an in-depth tour of the collection and the chance to observe how holograms are made!

Sunday, May 6th

PARADE FOR LOVE — For the 3rd year, Choose Love Now is kicking off the Parade for Love where hundreds of people dress up in eye-catching costumes and walk through NY with signs, pets, streamers, and instruments. Attendees gather for a meditation before the parade begins and spread love to passersby by gifting them with flowers.

ARTWORKS: A BENEFIT FOR ARTS GOWANUS — Head to ShapeShifter Lab to check out the annual ArtWorks fundraising event; it’s ways high-energy and exciting way to spend an evening wandering amongst an incredible exhibition between meeting Gowanus artists and other art-lovers and enjoying local food and beverages throughout the night.

Saturday, May 12th

FIRST STREET GREEN ANNUAL COMMUNITY BENEFIT — If you’re always admiring the murals off the 2nd Ave F/M station right above Houston and/or have always wanted to paint a mural, head over toFirst Street Green Art Park to create collaborative art through community workshops and live murals, and enjoy some killer live music.

THE CONFETTI PROJECT x WOLF & BADGER x SALLIE JOY — Still searching for something to gift your mom or the powerhouse womxn in your life? During Mother’s Day weekend douse them in confetti! The Confetti Project is teaming up with Wolf & Badger at their SoHo boutique that features independent designers, along with Sallie Joy for some killer confetti floral installation pieces.

MISTER SUNDAY OPENING DAY — If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing a Mister Sunday, jump in on their first party of the season! You’ll be able to dance the day away, grab some Caribbean food or killer BBQ, and sip down everything from margaritas and beer to kombucha and maté at the bar.

NICK CAVE: WEATHER OR NOT OPENING RECEPTION — I love gallery hopping my way around NYC and Nick Cave’s “Weather or Not” exhibit is debuting in a couple of weeks. The presentation will consist of “a series of wire Tondos, in which swirling cacophonies of colors are created from the layered mapping of cataclysmic weather patterns superimposed onto brain scans of black youth suffering PTSD as a result of gun violence.” Cave will have several museum exhibitions concurrently on view in NYC, including The Let Go which will open at the Park Avenue Armory next month.

ROOFTOP FILMS OPENING NIGHT AT A CEMETERY — For the last 22 years, Rooftop Films has kicked off their Summer Series with a mind blowing program featuring short films from all over the world. This year, the short films will be screened at Green-Wood
Cemetery
, followed by an after-party in the cemetery. I spend quite a lot of time in this cemetery attending concerts and other events and it’s definitely an entertaining group outing in a cool and unusual location!

Friday, May 25th — Sunday, May 27th

GROUNDSHIFT WEEKENDGroundshift invites attendees to dig into and re-imagine the systems that influence our lives in an immersive political experience. There will be performances, workshops, music, and multimedia art installations throughout the camp grounds, including some incredible live poetry. Whether you’re looking to generate new ideas, learn new skills, or meet new people, there will be some incredible things happening at Groundshift!
